Philippians 1:18b - 26

Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 19 for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. 20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.

Paul’s last words in this particular passage get me. “Through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.” The simple question this text asks of me is this; ‘do I cause peoples’ boasting to abound in Christ on account of me?’

In other words, do people boast like crazy about how good Christ is, how gracious Christ is, how powerful Christ is, as a result of being with me? Of course, Paul is saying this is his goal when with the Philippian church, I think. I don’t think he’s stating that this is his effect wherever he goes – that would be a bit self-exulting.

God, my goal, like the great Apostle Paul, is to cause people’s boasting to abound in Christ when they are around me. May people get more stoked on Jesus, become more passionate about following Jesus, become more sold out on following Christ, as a result of me being with them. May their affection for Christ, their desire for Christ, and their will to obey Christ increase as a result of hanging around me. This is my goal Father, help me by your Spirit to fulfill it!

I will need that prayer as well because I am not even close and judging by some peoples reactions I think I have the opposite effect!

    Thanks Rob
