2 Corinthians 11:1-6

11 I hope you will put up with me in a little foolishness. Yes, please put up with me! 2 I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. 3 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4 For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough. 5 I do not think I am in the least inferior to those “super-apostles.”[a] 6 I may indeed be untrained as a speaker, but I do have knowledge. We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way.

I like Paul’s analogy of the Corinthian Church in this passage – Paul being a loving father giving away his daughter at her wedding. He uses the word “jealous” to describe what’s happening and although it hasn’t happened to me yet I would add the words “joyful” “momentous” “heart-wrenching”.

But there’s a problem and its not with the Groom. Paul’s beautiful daughter – the Corinthian Church is potentially being corrupted and it’s affecting her devotion to Jesus. What’s more it’s in the fundamental stuff that should be rock solid; who is Jesus, who is the Holy Spirit and what is the gospel (how am I saved).

This can happen so easily to me too. The question is “is my devotion to Jesus getting stronger or weaker?” If the answer is the later I need to find the corruption and deal with it immediately. And some things are set in stone – completely immovable and completely non-negotiable;

  • Jesus died for me because He loves and rose from the dead.
  • The Holy Spirit lives in me as God’s guarantee.
  • I am saved only through faith in Jesus!

Jesus, please show me the areas of my life that I have allowed corruption to creep in. Help me get back to a pure and undivided devotion to You, the Holy Spirit and sharing Your gospel. Amen
