Matthew 13:54-58
54 He came to his hometown of Nazareth. There he began teaching the people in their synagogue. They were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom? Where did he get this power to do miracles?” they asked. 55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary? Aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Then where did this man get all these things?” 57 They were not pleased with him at all. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not honored in his hometown. He doesn’t receive any honor in his own home.” 58 He did only a few miracles there because they had no faith.
Wonder was extinguished by familiarity…
When Jesus’ hometown crowd first experienced His teaching it’s says they were amazed. Their eyes open in wonder. Then they focussed on what they “knew” about Him – His history with them, they couldn’t reconcile what they were experiencing (wonder and amazement) with the boy and the family they were familiar with.
So they dismissed the wonder…
They couldn’t see anymore…
Lord Jesus – help me receive what you have for me from wherever you choose to reveal it. Keep my eyes wide open in wonder and my heart ready to be amazed. I want to be faith- filled! You are at work everyday in the familiar places and people in my life. Open my eyes Lord – I want to see you. Open my heart Lord – I want to feel You. Open my mind Lord – I want to know You…wherever and however you want to show me.
