Psalm 121

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; 4 indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand; 6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; 8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

A simple statement of the nature of God. He is our HELP. A helper supplies us with things we need but are unable to do for ourselves. Here God is our protector, He keeps us from harm and He keeps us from stumbling, He shades us from harm from the sun by day and the moon by night. Our protector doesn’t sleep, he watches over us all the time, He watches our coming and going, he stands beside us. He watches over our life.
We can’t protect ourselves or control all our circumstances, but God is the help who can do this for us.
I find it very comforting to have an image of God watching me. Not in judgement, just in being aware of what I am up to and where I am headed. Clearing the way ahead of me as I career down dangerous paths. That sense of God’s supervision gives me a lot of courage. It reminds me of aspects of my nursing job. I have oversight of my patient, encouraging their independence and confidence, but thinking ahead of them. Keeping trip hazards out of their way, turning lights on so they can see where they are going, making sure they are comfortable and not injured in my care, I don’t leave them alone beyond my quick response. How much better than this is our God, He is infallible. He doesn’t get really busy and slow to answer our call, like I do.

The hard part is to keep this in my mind when things do cause me to stumble, it doesn’t mean that God is not there watching or that He doesn’t care. I don’t understand why many things happen but I do know that God is watching over me all the time, that he loves me, that he is powerful and that he is mitigating circumstances for me all the time.  I want to lean on his strong arm more this week, even though I will come across obstacles.

Thank you God for your vigilance, your power and goodness to me. Watch over me always and help me to rest knowing that you never sleep.
