26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
There is so much in this passage. It’s a simple account or story of the most profound event in HUMAN history. The beginning of US.
We were created by God, He made the very first people. He planned them, then he made them according to His will. Then he BLESSED them, gave them his purpose for their lives, and provided everything they needed for food.
We were planned, created, blessed and purposed by our God. That makes me feel special and valued. It also shows me the value of each and every human life.
In verses 26 and 27 the words “make” or “create” are used four times. They are all preceded by the name of the creator: “God said let us make”; “God created”; “He created”; “He created”. Yes the important point here is that we were brought into being in the very beginning BY God.
The other important point, made by repetition in these two verses, is that we were made in the IMAGE of GOD. “God said… in our image”; “to be like us”; “in His own image”; “in the image of God He created them”. We are not like the wild animals or the scurrying creatures that God made first. We were created to look like God, to BE like Him. An ‘image’ is never the real thing, only a reflection or representation. So we are NOT God, but we are meant to resemble Him in all we say and do, and in the way we treat the world and its inhabitants.
I am the image bearer of God. I will try to keep this in mind in all that I do, and ask myself if I am reflecting a good image of God to everyone I meet. I want people to see a loving, caring, creative God through my reflection.
Dear God please help me to have integrity, to bear the truest image of you that I can, to bring people to know their creator and His love and purpose for them. Amen.
