19 I hope to send Timothy to you soon if the Lord Jesus allows it. Then I will be encouraged when I receive news about you. 20 I have no one else like Timothy. He will truly care about how you are doing. 21 All the others are looking out for their own interests. They are not looking out for the interests of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know that Timothy has proved himself. He has served with me like a son with his father in spreading the good news. 23 So I hope to send him as soon as I see how things go with me. 24 And I’m sure I myself will come soon if the Lord allows it.
This short passage gives us a great picture of Paul and his understanding about the importance of relationship – his relationship with Timothy and Timothy’s interest in relationship with the Philippians. Just a few words but a picture that shows caring for one another, interest in the welfare of those around you is critical. Paul was in the midst of finding out what would happen to him – he was in jail and waiting to hear what would happen next (death was a possibility). He was not focused on himself but on the church in Philippi and how he could help Timothy grow in confidence in his ministry.
Relationship building and caring for one another were important to him. They should be important to us as well. I love the fact that God made us for relationship and that He wants us to be engaged with those around us – to love and care for them. Paul got God’s priorities – we need to as well.
Lord please help me to understand how to do relationship well. Please help me to see those in need around me. Please help me to work out how to care for those around me well. Please help me to have confidence in You – to know that You are inspiring others to be thinking about those same ideas for me. Your passion for each one of us to know we are loved beyond imagining is a great basis for our lives – help us to see the pictures You paint so we know!
