13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Be holy as I am Holy. I heard a sermon by one of my favourite authors recently, AW Tozer about this word, Holy. He mentioned that moral purity, which is the first thing I think of when I hear the word holy, was actually just implied and not the whole meaning. He said that holy means kind. Holy means merciful. I means a mysterious “over-plus” of God’s presence. It rests on some people – a mysterious sense of God that surrounds that person and the things they do. It’s the “shekinah” of God – the amazing fire of God that led the Israelites by day and by night.

I read a book about Smith Wigglesworth a few years ago who seemed to have this mysterious God-ness in his life. There were times when the sense of God was so much on this man that people around him would be convicted of sin without him saying a word. Others would say “I can’t be in the same train carriage a you – I feel too guilty.”

Wouldn’t that be awesome? To be so filled with God and his holiness that it helps others experience God without even a word being spoken.

Lord, help me know what it means to “be holy as you are holy”.  Help me, fill me, use me, may those around me experience you and your mysterious presence through me. Amen
