1 John‬ ‭3:19-24‬ ‭‬‬

19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24 The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

Initially this short passage seems quite convoluted and hard to understand. Maybe it is difficult to translate into English, maybe John was just so pumped up about the goodness of God that he was writing in an ecstatic fashion!

I took the following truths out of what John is saying here:

We can be at peace in God’s presence by:

  • Recognising that God is greater than even our own heart or conscience, when plagued by guilt we are to throw ourselves at Him, he will help us sort through these feelings in due time.
  • Seeking to please and obey Him
  • Believing that God’s Spirit is with us

We can be confident in prayer if:

  • We are seeking to please and obey Him

We can be confident of his presence if:

  • We are seeking to please and obey Him

We please and obey God when we:

  • Believe and follow Jesus Christ, the Son of God
  • Love one another

So basically the message to me is simple:

  • Believe Jesus
  • Love one another
  • Don’t doubt God’s mighty presence with me
  • Repeat the above three and PRAY BOLDLY

God you gave your Son to make me your child. You love me, you are with me, you call me to love others. You will answer my prayers as I believe these things. Amen
