Luke 5:33-39

33 They said to him, “John’s disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.” 34 Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.” 36 He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”

Motivation, rules and duty. Today’s passage shows Jesus thinking on why we do what we do. Jesus is our brother and we are part of God’s family. God wants our lives to be lived as part of His family not just following rules or feeling like you are looked on by a judge. The bible shows us lots about what is best for us. Not so we follow rules religiously but to help us do well in His family.

Life would be easier, in some ways, if there was just a list of things we need to do to know we are part of His family and we could tick everything off. But God is about grace, peace and love. Life full of grace, peace and love is a life full of richness and beauty that has celebrations as well as sadness’s but not a to do list.

Lord God thank You so much that living life with You is full of grace and peace and love. Help us to learn how to do life in Your family well. Help us to know Your love and to treat those around us with that love too.
