Luke 8:22-25

22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

So really …. I have a lot of questions here. Did Jesus set the disciples up? Surely, he knew there would be a storm? Why was he asleep? How could he have slept through a situation where everyone would have been soaked and believed they were going to die? Seriously! But the parallels to my life are there.

There have been times in my life when I have been following the direction of God, and yet halfway there, stuff happens that is serious and distracting. Does that mean I misheard in the first place? No. Jesus could have jumped up and stopped the storm before the disciples came to him, but he didn’t. Maybe God waits for us to give Him the situation before he acts? Just so we are paying attention. Many times, just like the disciples I have been amazed at the power of God. Maybe it doesn’t matter that our lives, like this passage are filled with unanswered questions. Maybe the real question – just like Jesus asked – is ‘where is your (my) Faith?’

Jesus, help me to trust in you completely. Help me to keep my faith in you and help me to focus on the things that really matter. In your name I pray. Amen

  1. Sam S says:

Jesus wakes up: “Where is your faith?!?”
    Disciples: “We’re looking at him!”

    Thanks for sharing Christine
