Psalm 43

1 Vindicate me, my God, and plead my cause against an unfaithful nation. Rescue me from those who are deceitful and wicked. 2 You are God my stronghold. Why have you rejected me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy? 3 Send me your light and your faithful care, let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell. 4 Then I will go to the altar of God, to God, my joy and my delight. I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God. 5 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God

The emotional rollercoaster of a Psalm by David. First, he calls out to God for rescue – he’s in some trouble. Then calls God his safe haven – things are going well, then he wonders why he had been tossed out.

Questions are ok. It’s okay to have doubts. It’s actually normal, it’s called growing in faith. No one comes to God with fully formed faith. It is in the walk of life that faith is tested, stretched and grown.

David lets us in on his faith journey and shows us that it’s not one good news story after another, but full of ups and downs. It’s in these times that David calls out to God, asking him to send the light and the truth to guide him forward to be with God, the source of all his joy.

Whether today is a high or low on the roller coaster of life, God’s Word is the light for our path, and the foundation of truth to stand on. It will lead us into God’s presence, the source of all our joy.

I will put my hope in God! (NLT).
