Matthew 5:17-20

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

I find it interesting that we are always surrounded by laws and rules, whether established by religious bodies, governments, work places, within families or just personal.. do we ever keep them all, can we? Under the old covenant, there were also multiple laws added to God’s original 10 commandments. It certainly seemed impossible.

Later in Matthew 22:34-40, Jesus summaries the law & commandments to love God with all our heart, soul & mind & then the second, to love our neighbour … maybe then it is possible when we put all law into this perspective. Even though we are under the new testament, can I even do this? I know I need help as there have been many times when love has been lacking.

Jesus is the only one who has fulfilled all the OT law, he loved and obeyed God completely so much so that he died in our place to keep what he knew we couldn’t. His sacrifice has allowed us to enter the kingdom of heaven and right relationship with the Father with the Holy Spirit enabling us to love where we naturally can not.

Thank you Jesus. I know that I can not pass any grade of righteousness, thank you that you took my my penalty for sin, you have freely given of yourself allowing me/us to enter the presence of the Father and kingdom of heaven.
