A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.
God reveals a beautiful truth about his way of living: those who are generous will prosper. In this verse, the emphasis is on being generous, not on being prosperous. But I think we tend to place the emphasis on being prosperous, that is, on how much we do or don’t have, and we use that to determine the limits of our generosity.
However, generosity is linked to who I am and how much I trust God to take care of my own needs. Do I have a heart that wants to give? Do I want to give others my time, assistance, grace, kind words, patience, benefit of the doubt, a second/third chance, etc? Does someone need these things from me, and will I offer it to them?
These are not easy words to write. Being generous is not always convenient for me! I have needs too. But it is in these moments that Father God wants me to trust him and choose to be generous like he is. And when I do? I am refreshed and encouraged because I am choosing to live his way.
Father, I thank you that you are generous towards me and take care of my needs! Help me to remember this so that I can be generous like you.
