Proverbs 3:9-10

(9) Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; (10) then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

What are you wealthy in? Our minds instantly go to the bank balance. To be honest the area of giving often takes some work once we become followers of Jesus. There are other areas where we have wealth and where God can be honoured but the principle of this passage is speaking of honouring God with the first of the finances (crops) that we receive. Money can have such a stranglehold over our lives, especially now as costs are rising.

Giving has become second nature to me now but it wasn’t always like that. It has been and is a discipline. Incorporating giving to God first and the work of His church, into my life, I have seen this principle in these verses outworked. I have always had enough with definite times of overflowing. God knows that the generous spirit being formed within us by giving to Him first, will bring us freedom, broaden our lives and transform us as we refocus our lives toward Him, His church, His people, to build something eternal, instead of just for ourselves. Jesus speaks about this in Matt 6:19-20 – about not storing things up for this life but for eternity.

Lord as you transform our hearts toward you, continue to grow a generous giving spirit, considering you first well before ourselves. You know Lord what we need, help us to see through your eyes and the gift of Jesus that you have given us. Amen

Thanks for your encouragement this morning Suzie!

The concept of an agrarian society with no formal social welfare system giving away their first crop scares the life out of me.

“But what if there is flood or hail or blight or plague after I have given to the Lord?”

“Have faith. Your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim with new wine”

The faith shown by the Israelites in their finances is inspiring to me.

Lord, help me to have this kind of faith in the way I give.
