John 1:15-18

15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ”) 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

Here is the first time John labels Jesus as God. This is a culmination of the various names he has already given Jesus throughout chapter 1 and is a great declaration of faith.

God has spoken to me through this passage about how Jesus has made God known (v18). To me personally, but also to everyone who has ever lived. With the coming of Jesus, no longer is Yahweh just the God of his chosen people the Israelites. Now everyone can know him.

Jesus can make God known because he is fully God (v16) – not a person with some God-like traits. Colossians 2:9 says “out of the fullness of God that is in Christ, we have all received grace.” Because of God’s amazing grace, He died so we can all be saved.

He has existed with God for ever, so knows him intimately, knows his heart. God sent him to save us but also through his life and death to show us who God really is. He is a God of grace, of compassion, of justice, a creator and a father. He is without sin, holy. If I want to get to know God, what he is really like, I need to get to know Jesus.

Above all, Jesus shows that God’s heart is for relationship. The intimacy Jesus has with His Father permeates his life, his thoughts. They are connected. Jesus told his disciples this intimacy is for them as well – John 14:20 “On that day you will realise that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.“ Wow! God longs to be in relationship with me. Jesus not only shows me what that is like, he makes it possible too.

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you that you brought heaven down to us when you came to live on Earth. Your life and death draw me to God, and you are so worthy of my trust and to be the centre of my life. Thank you for being the infinite source of grace and truth to me. Amen
