John 1:29-34

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”

Mary and Elizabeth both knew that Jesus was the Messiah, they had been told this before Jesus was born.  Here John the Baptist (Elizabeth’s son) has been told by the Holy Spirit that He will witness WHO the Messiah is when the Holy Spirit descends on Him like a dove.  He fully admits that he did not know it would be his cousin, Jesus.  However, Jesus comes along, asks to be baptised and the Holy Spirit upon Him, revealing He is the Messiah to John.

I love John the Baptist; it says he was a “quirky”.  He wore funny clothes, ate unusual food (locusts and honey) and in many ways probably kept to Himself, He was fully focussed on doing what God had told him to do, not what the “world” thought he should do.

In a world obsessed with being popular, I think God often wants to use those who don’t follow the world, who don’t look like the world, whose heart beats for a different Kingdom, for life changing moments.  Baptising Jesus was a HOLY moment.

In that moment what God has spoken to John comes into being: “A man is coming after me who is far great than I am, for HE existed long before me”.  At that moment John gets saved, He knows who Jesus is, He knows He is the Messiah they have been waiting for, for thousands of years.

When John’s life is finally taken from him by an evil king, he knows where he is going.  He does not bow his knee to world.  His Messiah lives.

Prayer:  Lord, help me to be fearless like John.  Help me Lord Jesus to stand up for you and your Kingdom wherever I am.  Let me declare your love and mercy all the days of my life.  In Jesus name.  Amen

Thx Sue for the reminder about who & what we follow.
I love this brief glimpse of John, which reveals so much. In a time, when so few understood who Jesus was and what His mission was, God revealed so much to John.
His mission- “Look the lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world”. His divinity – he comes after me but surpasses me because he was before me. His relationship with God – “see the spirit come down on and remain on is the one who will baptise with the HS”.
And Jesus honours John & foretells of the Kingdom coming. Matt 11:11, “no one born of women has risen greater than John..”, “but even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. “
    Get your head around that!
