1 John 3:11-15

11 This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 We must not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because Cain had been doing what was evil, and his brother had been doing what was righteous. 13 So don’t be surprised, dear brothers and sisters, if the world hates you. 14 If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers, it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead. 15 Anyone who hates another brother or sister is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don’t have eternal life within them.

That we should love one another. What a beautiful reminder today of the thing that is most important to God. That we love Him and that we love one another. It is so easy to get frustrated with other people or with ourselves when things do not go as we imagined. But God asks us to spend every day putting loving the person in front of us first and foremost. He gives some pretty harsh stories here about what happens when we don’t love. But I think our focus today should be on the instruction at the beginning of the passage – that we should love one another.

So let us spend the day being patient and kind, not being irritable, not keeping records of wrongs against us, never giving up on those around us, being hopeful, not being jealous or rude and never losing faith in God that He is there to help us be and do all these every minute of every day.

Dear Lord, thank you for the amazing love you have for each of us and that you give us the capacity to love those around us all the time. Help us to remember your love for us. Help us to see how we can best love those around us. Help us to notice ways of loving that we could improve in. Thanks so much. Amen
