Relationship workout
1 Timothy 4:6-10
6 If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. 7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. 10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.
“…physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things…” (v8).
We tend to think of physical training as hard effort, and usually it is. But the truth is effort tends to produce good results. Even if it gets repetitive or boring.
The Message bible says a “disciplined life in God” will make us fit. I think of this in terms of being strong and healthy spiritually and soulfully. So, my question is, what am I doing regularly to strengthen my relationship with God and my human spirit? Have some of my regular practices, like prayer and journaling, attending church, singing worship songs got a bit repetitive? Keep at it because it will keep me fit spiritually.
But like a physical fitness program, maybe I need to change my routine up a bit? So, think outside the box – or the four walls of church! Ask yourself, when do I most feel connected to God? When does my spirit come alive? Is it when I meet with a Christian friend during the week, and we spend time talking about Jesus and what’s really on my heart? Is it when I’m creating something? Is it when I do a deep dive into the bible and get a better understanding on a complex topic? Is it when I’m dancing to songs of worship? Maybe it’s when I’m watching the waves? Maybe it’s sitting in solitude? Maybe it’s being surrounded by friends?
Whatever strengthens your spiritual muscle, keep doing these things. Remember, this godly training will reap a reward: Him.
