Watching expectantly
Luke 23:44-49
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.
47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
The witnesses in this scene from the Bible all have different responses. The Centurion declares and praises, the witnesses beat their breasts, however “those who KNEW HIM” watched.
They watched Jesus, they watched the other prisoners beside Him, they watched the crowd and the authorities.
Jesus had said what would happen, but it probably sounded strange – I am going to rise from the dead. However, they had walked with Jesus and also seen so many miracles I think there was an expectation in His followers, about what could happen. What was Jesus going to do?
It makes me consider do I live in expectation of what God can do?
I think we should. Our faith switch is that God can do anything. He can provide (He can get finance from a fish’s mouth), He can heal today, He can restore, He can do anything and change any situation.
Lord, we know that you can do all things. As we come to you today, we place the cry of our hearts and the prayers of our lips in your hands. Come Lord Jesus to our land, to our homes, to our Church and bring a fresh wind of trust and belief in what you can do. Reveal yourself so tangibly to each of us. You do hold the whole world in your hands. Thank you, Jesus.
