My words will never pass away
Luke 21:29-33
29 He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.
32 “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
This whole chapter can be confusing and can leave readers in fear. I know as a new Christian it did for me. But I’ve come to understand that fear is not a part of God’s character. Fear is not something he leaves with us; peace is what he leaves with us. (John 14:27)
Jesus has been letting his disciples and believers know about 2 events that are to happen in the future. He is giving them security and peace that they will know the timing just like they know the seasons of the fig tree. The first prophecy happened in 70AD with the fall of Jerusalem – believers left and were spared the destruction. The second is Jesus’s second coming. He has told us to watch and be ready. This event is not something we are to fear as our redemption is near (v28).
The takeaway from this passage for me, is that the words of Jesus will not pass away, they are going to happen. He’s told us of things to come and the surety of his coming again. He has given us many promises like his peace, his everlasting love, our salvation, his mercy, his compassion, that he will never leave us, we can grab hold of these things and hang on to them for our lives now and into the future. Whether I see Jesus come again in my lifetime or not, either way I can have peace that I will be with him in eternity.
Lord thank you that you have not left us in any doubt of the future, you have given us the certainty of your love and your peace, our redemption is coming. Amen
