It’s about relationship
Acts 2:42-47
42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.
43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.
This group of believers was made up of Jews from all around “Asia” and the Mediterranean. They were those who came to faith during Pentecost while visiting Jerusalem- see earlier in chapter 2.
The priorities of this early group of Christians are a guide for us. Focusing on the Word, eating together and supporting each other. They met in the temple courts where they would have been visible to others. And they were looking outward to the community, resulting in more and more joining and coming to faith.
What drew them together was their faith in God. Whilst they already all shared a faith being Jews, clearly something more was taking place here. They were now doing life together as they took their first steps in a life following Jesus.
Doing life together in fellowship with other Christians means to me chances to celebrate Gods love together, to face challenges with the support of other believers who remind me that God hasn’t abandoned me, who will stand with me in those times. It is the opportunity to serve others with the gifts he has given me to use. And lastly to invite others to also meet Jesus in a community I know will support and welcome them.
It’s not about programs or incredible events – Christ centred fellowship is about relationship which grows my faith and makes me look beyond myself. It is also about sacrifice. The glue is the power of the Holy Spirit who helps us make sacrifices for each other, to love each other differences and all, to forgive each other. This fellowship is a precious thing which I value.
Dear Lord Jesus, you have called me into relationship with you. You have placed me into your church so I can be in relationship with your people. I don’t take this for granted. Your church is your bride – to be honoured and valued. Forgive me the times I have neglected meeting together and had a critical spirit towards my church family. Bless your church today, Lord. Amen
