Authentic life

Titus 2:6-10

6 Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. 7 In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

9 Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, 10 and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.

Am I the kind of person others would like to be like, or the kind of person that is made an example of? Do I represent my faith in God through my actions, speech and thoughts? In our post-modern culture Christians have been represented as boring, sanctimonious and even hypocritical. But that is not how I want to live or be remembered as a believer. This passage does not once suggest being boring, judgemental or dishonest. In fact, we are being encouraged to be the exact opposite- trustworthy, influential and engaging, living our best lives. In a world increasingly lacking absolutes and boundaries as believers we need to live counter-culturally. Living authentic Christian lives means choosing to live like Jesus, not lecture Him to others. It means making conscious choices to live right, with respect for boundaries and self-restraint when required, not just following the crowd or taking advantage (just cause the boss/spouse isn’t watching). And this is across every part of our lives 24/7. Our authentic lives will attract others to Christ, not give them reasons to dismiss Him.

Lord Jesus thank you for all that you have done for me. I am sorry for the times when I mess up and make poor choices. Help me today to be more like you. Help me to love others, to live a life of integrity and to bring glory to your mighty name. Amen
