Jesus, ‘the Word’, is the way to life with God.
John 1:1-3, 14
1In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
2 He existed in the beginning with God.
3 God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.…
14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
God doesn’t make mistakes. And He doesn’t just react to circumstances as though he didn’t expect them.
Jesus, the Word, was there at creation. He was there when everything was perfect, before people decided to take matters into their own hands and reject God. But the plan for Him to come and live amongst us already existed too. The plan for Him to restore us to relationship with God wasn’t a last minute one – it was a perfect plan and promise from the beginning too.
God chose the Israelites to be his people, but he also promised that they would be a light to the nations. In Jesus, that light came to earth. The name John used for him – the Word or Logos, was something which was meaningful to both Jewish people and Gentile people. It showed both groups of people that Jesus was the one they were waiting for, and it drew them towards relationship with Him.
So, in a few short verses, John has shown us how God fulfilled his promise of rescue and his promise that the Israelites would be a light to the nation. John says he has seen his glory – I think the fulfilment of these verses is pretty glorious!
Thank you, Father, for your good promises, and thank you, Jesus, for being the fulfilment of those promises. May more people come to understand the plan you had from the beginning and accept the gift of eternal life with you. Amen
