A unique authority
21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.
27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
What does it mean to have authority? Someone with authority has the power to give orders and make decisions, they influence others’ thoughts and behaviours.
The people listening to Jesus’ teaching noted that he spoke with authority. There was power to his new teachings, the words he spoke influenced their thoughts – they were amazed. This makes sense, given God is the ultimate authority of the universe as its creator, and all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Jesus (Matt 28:18-20). Jesus provided evidence of his authority by ordering an impure spirit out of a man.
When we read Jesus’ teaching, it can be easy to miss the authority with which he spoke. As we dwell on the words of Jesus, let’s remember the power and authority in which he teaches, and the life change that comes as result of his words.
Lord Jesus, thank you that you have all authority on heaven and earth. Thank you that your words are powerful and life changing. Help us to experience your authority as we read the Bible, would we to be amazed at who you are and the words you speak. Amen.
